I want a van to drive my 5-year-old … to school and activities, to use it as my office, and to take a weekend escape in the PNW and beyond. … Airoki is the exact layout I want. A Sprinter AWD is the only choice for me given the condition of the city I live in. … with the budget I have, Highland Van built me a van that goes beyond my expectations; I appreciate the professional team, the flexibility, honesty, and kindness.

We could not be happier with Highlands Vans quality and the build out collaboration. … Highland Vans listened to our ideas and made them better. The result is a highly functional buildout 5 years, 34 states and 75,000 miles later. … The team is highly skilled, trust worthy and stands behind their product. We are proud customers.

I couldn't be any more happy that I picked Highland Vans to build my van! From the very beginning to delivery of the vehicle they were AMAZING! … The craftsmanship is top notch!!! Every cut is perfect, my windows are so sleek, and the electrical and plumbing equipment is the best! I did not need to plug in once for 2 weeks.

I originally purchased a new Sprinter with the intention of building it out myself. … once I visited their shop, the quality of their products completely exceeded my expectations. … I was pleasantly surprised by how competitive their pricing was for a complete, turnkey build. … my build wouldn't have been possible if they hadn't agreed to take my van in immediately, allowing me to hit the road for my trip south just six weeks later.

The whole team is very professional … They did amazing job for me. Don't waste time going to big camper dealers. The difference between them and companies like Highland Vans are like day and night.

We had a great experience working with Highland Vans on our camper build. … While the build did take longer than we initially expected, the final result was absolutely worth the wait. … If you’re considering a custom van build and want something made with quality materials and attention to detail, we would definitely recommend reaching out.

Frequently Asked Questions About Highland Vans
About Highland Vans
What makes Highland Vans different from other builders?
We’ve been building custom Sprinter conversions since 2020 and have completed more than 150 builds to date. A few things set our work apart:
- Aluminum-framed cabinetry instead of plywood boxes. It’s lighter, stronger, doesn’t swell with humidity, and holds up to years of vibration on rough roads.
- A proprietary Murphy bed system on the Aoraki and the Parbat, which folds up to keep the rear gear garage open by day and drops down to a full sleeping area at night. The Kinabalu answers the same question with a rear lounge that converts to a bed.
- Top-tier electrical components — Victron inverters and charge controllers paired with Lithionics lithium batteries. Not the cheapest path, but the most reliable.
- Honest pricing — competitive with the big national builders, with build quality and resale value we’ll happily put up against anyone in the industry.
Where are you located?
Our shop is in Elk Grove Village, Illinois, just outside Chicago. We build everything in-house, and visitors are welcome by appointment.
Models & Pricing
What van models do you offer?
We currently build three models on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform:
- Aoraki — starting around $145,000. Our entry into the Highland lineup, with the Murphy bed and aluminum cabinetry as standard. Core gives you everything you need, and Pro gives you that with more power capacity and more ways to charge it.
- Kinabalu — starting around $150,000. Our family hauler, with seating for up to five and a convertible dinette that drops into a day bed. Equally at home at soccer practice or out on the open road.
- Parbat — starting around $170,000. Our flagship long wheelbase adventure rig with more room, expanded power capacity, premium finishes, and additional off-grid systems built for serious extended travel.
All three models are built to spec — the layout, systems, and major components are pre-engineered — which means faster delivery and proven reliability.
Why is your pricing similar to the big national builders?
Because we benchmarked it that way on purpose. You shouldn’t have to pay a premium to get a better-built van. Where we differ from larger builders is what’s inside the price: aluminum framing instead of plywood, name-brand electrical components, and the kind of fit-and-finish that holds its value when you eventually sell.
Does the price include the van itself?
Yes. Our Aoraki, Parbat and Kinabalu pricing is turnkey — you get a brand-new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and a complete Highland conversion, ready to drive off the lot.
Customization
Can I make changes to a spec model?
Within reason, yes. Spec models exist because the layouts work — they’re refined over dozens of builds. On top of that foundation, we offer a curated set of options and upgrades: expanded solar, additional seating, exterior accessories, and finish upgrades. We’ll walk you through what’s available during the order process.
Do you take fully custom orders?
We focus on our spec models because that’s where we deliver the most value. If you have a clear vision that doesn’t fit any of the three, let’s talk — but expect a longer timeline and a different conversation about pricing.
Build Process & Timeline
How long does a build take?
If we have an Aoraki, Parbat or Kinabalu already in inventory, you can usually take delivery within a couple of weeks of final prep. If you’re ordering one to be built from scratch, plan on about three months from reserving your build slot — most of that is chassis sourcing and queue time, not the build itself.
Every customer gets a real timeline up front and updates as the build progresses. No vague promises.
Do you have any vans ready to drive home now?
Inventory turns over quickly and the answer changes month to month. Reach out and we’ll tell you exactly what’s on the floor, what’s mid-build, and what production slots are open.
Can I visit your shop and see a van in person?
Absolutely. Our shop is in Elk Grove Village, IL, and we love showing people around. You’ll see vans in different stages of the build, meet the team, and get a real sense of how we work. Schedule a visit through our contact page.
We also bring vans to regional shows and expos throughout the year. Ask us what is coming up.
Living & Travel
How many people can travel in one of your vans?
It depends on the model, and on each one the maximum is an option rather than the standard build:
- Aoraki — 2 sit / 2 sleep as standard, 4 sit / 4 sleep at most.
- Kinabalu — 4 sit / 2 sleep as standard, 5 sit / 4 sleep at most. It is the only van in the lineup that seats four on every build.
- Parbat — 2 sit / 2 sleep as standard, 4 sit / 4 sleep at most.
Tell us how you travel and we’ll lay out the options.
Can I live in a Highland van full-time?
Yes — many of our customers do. The Aoraki, Parbat, and Kinabalu are all designed around full off-grid systems, with battery capacity, solar, heating, and water sized for long stays away from hookups. The Parbat in particular is geared toward longer-duration trips and full-time living.
Logistics
Do you deliver vans outside of Illinois?
Yes. Many of our out-of-state customers fly into Chicago and drive their van home — it makes for a great first road trip. If that’s not practical, we can arrange enclosed transport nationwide. Ask us for a quote.
Can I bring my own Sprinter for you to convert?
Yes. We work on both empty and built-out vans, and what we can fit depends on which one yours is. Every job is quoted individually after an inspection. The systems and cabinetry we build carry our conversion warranty on the same terms as a van we supplied, because it is our work either way — the chassis, and anything already in the van when it arrives, are not. Our upgrades page lists what goes into a van we did not build.
Financing & Warranty
Do you help with financing?
Yes. We work with intoRV, an RV-lending specialist, and they can pre-qualify you before you start the order. Loan terms commonly run up to 20 years, which keeps monthly payments manageable. We’ll introduce you, and their team handles the approval. Our finance page carries a worked payment example.
What’s covered under warranty?
You get two layers of coverage:
- Chassis warranty — Mercedes-Benz factory warranty on the Sprinter and its drivetrain.
- Highland Vans build warranty — a 3-year / 36,000-mile workmanship warranty (whichever comes first) covering the conversion work, cabinetry, electrical integration, plumbing, insulation, and installed systems.
Warranty service is performed at our Elk Grove Village, IL shop. For owners out of the region, call us first: for a covered repair away from Chicago we’ll pre-authorize a certified RV technician or marine electrician near you and pay for the approved work directly — full details are on our warranty page.
We’re also a phone call away long after delivery. That’s part of what makes Highland Vans special — the people who built your van are the same people who answer when you call.
Components & Parts
What electrical components do you use?
Victron Energy for inverters, charge controllers, and system monitoring. Lithionics for lithium battery banks. These are the components professional installers and serious overlanders specify when reliability matters more than initial cost.
I’m building my own van — can I buy parts from you?
Yes. We run an online parts store stocked with the same components we install in our own builds. If you’re a DIYer working on a Sprinter or another platform, you can source proven gear from us directly and skip the trial-and-error of figuring out what actually works.
Getting Started
What’s the first step?
Reach out through our contact page or give us a call. We’ll set up a conversation to learn how you plan to use the van, walk you through which model fits, and answer anything that’s not covered here. From there, the path is straightforward — no high-pressure sales process.
