The Do-It-All Sprinter 144 Conversion
One van for your whole life. The Kinabalu is engineered for people who refuse to choose between the family car and the adventure rig, just as comfortable on school runs and city errands as it is at a tailgate, a trailhead, or a week off-grid. Built on the AWD Mercedes Sprinter 144, it parks in normal spaces Monday through Friday and disappears up a forest road on Saturday.
The Kinabalu seats four with two L-track mounted RRE Global Smartseats behind the cab. Mid-van, the kitchen galley carries a deep stainless sink, an induction cooktop, and a solid-surface countertop under warm galley glow lighting. And in the rear, the Kinabalu’s signature space: a lounge built around a collapsible floor-mount table. Its genuinely comfortable for board games, homework, big dinners, or doing nothing at all. At night, the table collapses and converts the lounge to a bed.

Seating Options
The Kinabalu comes standard with belted seating for four: two L-track mounted RRE Global Smartseats behind the cab, mounted for real-world family duty. It’s the only van in our lineup where the whole crew rides belted every day. Multiple seating options are available, including pull-tested, ergonomic scheel-mann seats as an upgrade.
Convertible Lounge & Bench Bed System
The Kinabalu’s rear lounge does double duty by design. By day, bench seating with a table for meals, games, and hangouts; by night, it converts in minutes to a comfortable bed. No nightly furniture Tetris — just a lounge that becomes a bedroom and back again.
HPL Laminates & Baltic Birch
We craft the Kinabalu’s interior using premium Baltic Birch plywood finished with High-Pressure Laminate (HPL), creating a beautiful yet highly functional living space. This marine-grade construction provides an exceptionally solid foundation that is highly resistant to scratches, moisture, and the intense vibrations of off-road travel. Aluminum Construction
The overhead cabinets are framed in precision-bent sheet metal aluminum, which is where the load sits above your head. These high-strength modules are lightweight and rigid, and they do not develop the squeaks, rattles, and shifts a wood frame picks up over a few thousand miles of washboard. Unlike wood or composite frames, aluminum will never rot, warp, or degrade over time.

Kinabalu Upgrades and Add-Ons
No two owners load a van the same way. Every upgrade below can be added to a Kinabalu Core or a Kinabalu Pro build at the price shown, so the finished spec follows how you actually use the van.

Who is the Kinabalu built for?
The Kinabalu is our do-it-all van, starting at $150,000. It’s built for people who need one vehicle to cover everything: the family car on weekdays, the tailgate rig on Saturday, and the adventure van for long weekends and road trips. If the van has to earn its keep in the city and off-grid and everyone needs a seatbelt this is the one.
How many people can sleep and travel in a Kinabalu?
Four people ride belted, standard. Two up front and two L-track mounted RRE Global Smartseats behind the cab. It’s the only Highland van with seating for four on every build, no packages required. Sleeping is two, on the rear lounge bed with a 5” Roam Rest memory foam mattress. An optional rooftop tent takes sleeping to four. The 144” roof fits the tent or a rooftop air conditioner and not both, so a build with a tent takes an undermount Cruise and Comfort unit instead. You keep the air conditioning either way.
How does the bathroom work?
Every Kinabalu comes standard with a Wrappon Sunny self-sealing dry-flush toilet housed in a 4-drawer cabinet on heavy-duty slides — no black tank, no dump station. Pro builds add an exterior shower system with the Pundmann water heater and the 15-gallon fresh tank for rinse-offs after the trail.
What’s the difference between the Core and Pro power packages?
Same two packages as every Highland Vans build: Core runs a 5 kWh EcoFlow system; Pro steps up to 8.4 kWh of Lithionics lithium with a full Victron system and dedicated alternator charging, plus the exterior package (suspension, KO3 tires on Method 701 wheels, Owl Vans gear), air conditioning, premium plumbing with hot water — and on the Kinabalu, the Smart TV entertainment console. The 8.4 kWh Lithionics upgrade is also available à la carte on a Core build worth considering if you’ll run the TV console off-grid often.
How long can I stay off-grid in a Kinabalu?
Honest answer: it depends on weather, A/C use, and how many people are aboard. Power-wise, the Core’s 5 kWh handles a long weekend of careful use; the Pro’s 8.4 kWh runs about 3–4 days in good sun with normal cooking and modest A/C, and running the engine puts charge back wherever you are parked. Water is the real planning number, because a top-up means finding a fill station: Core carries refill-anywhere 6-gallon jerry cans perfect for the Kinabalu’s natural rhythm of moving every day or two while Pro’s 15-gallon fresh / 21-gallon grey system supports longer stays, though a family of four will work through it faster than a couple.
Can I daily-drive a Kinabalu?
That’s the point of it. The 144” footprint parks in standard spaces, fits surface lots, and drives like a normal Sprinter. Plenty of owners run it as the household’s only vehicle, school runs included. The one honest constraint is height: like every high-roof Sprinter, plan on 10 ft of clearance, which rules out most home garages and some parking structures.
Is the Kinabalu good for tailgating?
It might be the best tailgate vehicle ever built. Slide the doors open, fire up the induction cooktop and the fridge, and put the game on the TV console — all running silent off lithium power. When the lot clears out, you’ve still got a bed, a heater, and a toilet on board.
What’s the deal with the TV and game console?
The Smart TV entertainment console is a Kinabalu exclusive. No other Highland van offers it. It’s included on every Pro build and available as an option on Core. Movie nights at camp, a game console for the back-seat crew on long drives, or a big screen for the tailgate all running off your lithium power bank, no generator, no idling.
Kinabalu vs Aoraki — which 144 is right for me?
Both are 144” builds. Pick the Aoraki (from $145,000) if you travel solo or as a couple and want the Murphy bed with the big rear gear garage. Pick the Kinabalu (from $150,000) if you need four belted seats and would rather have a rear lounge than a cargo bay. Rule of thumb: garage or living room - what do you want to see when you open the back doors?
Kinabalu vs Parbat — which family van?
The Kinabalu is the family van that’s also the family car: four belted seats, easy 144” parking, the TV console for long drives. The Parbat (from $170,000) is the family trip van: the 170” chassis buys the interior shower, the full-height pantry, and the only roof that carries A/C and a rooftop tent together — but it needs a dedicated parking plan. If the van’s main job is daily life with weekends off-grid, Kinabalu; if the main job is the road itself, Parbat.
